October In Malta| What Is Happening In Malta In October?
- Sep 16, 2018
Special events you should consider if you are in Malta this coming October...
Although the weather in October may not be as appealing as the scorching summer months, it’s still a lot warmer in Malta than it is in other parts of Europe. Temperatures average in the early 20s and the sea is still relatively warm for swimming and diving in. Malta is definitely a country worth visiting in October, as not only are there beautiful views and attractions to see, there are a range of great events happening too. Here are some of our favourites.
Notte Bianca
On the 6th October, Malta’s biggest free arts and cultural event, Notte Bianca, brightens the cityscape of Valletta with an amazing celebration, free for everyone to visit. The very best of live music, dance, visual arts, theatre and literary events will be spread throughout the city. The streets of Valletta will be lit up and used in creative ways to give you the most artistic and festival-like experience imaginable, with a focus on digital media creations.
Museums and state palaces open their doors to show off the delightful art exhibitions and theatrical performances. All restaurants and cafés in Valletta extend their hours on this night too, so the city will be buzzing with atmosphere.
Birgu Fest
Birgu Fest, starting on Friday 12th October and finishing on Sunday 14th, is a cultural treat you’ll definitely want to experience.
The celebration of art and culture is taking place in Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, one of Malta’s most historical cities. It started off as a few small events but has now turned into a large and spectacular programme spread over a whole weekend of celebrations.
The winding streets and pathways are lit up with candles and chandeliers, making the city look as picturesque and idyllic as possible. Historical re-enactments, musical concerts and art exhibitions are just a few of the things that you’ll experience at Birgu Fest. Many of the museums and historical buildings offer discounted prices during the event, another reason to visit Birgu that weekend.

Rolex Middle Sea Race
Taking place on the 20th October is the famous Rolex Middle Sea Race, starting at the Grand Harbour in Valletta. This year marks its 50th anniversary so the Royal Malta Yacht Club has promised it’s going to be a very special race.
Over 30 countries took part last year, including South Africa, United States and New Zealand, and this year promises to be no different. The course record has only been broken on five occasions since the inaugural edition in 1968, with the current record being established in 2007 at 47 hours 55 minutes. It’ll be exciting to see whether the record gets broken this year!
The race isn’t the only entertaining part of the event, as there is a pre-race party with free drinks, delicious food and room for plenty of dancing taking place. Although it is a described as a “pre-race” party, the music and dancing flows all throughout the night.
Casa Ellul is in the perfect location when wanting to visit any of these events, as well as any other main attractions in Malta. As Notte Bianca and the Middle Sea Race are both located in Valletta, it won’t take you long at all to get to either event and you can easily walk to the centre of the action. Birgu Fest in Birgu is easy to get to by ferry from Valletta – just ask us if you need more information of how to get there.
