Upcoming Festive Season Events Malta 2019/2020!

Cities around the globe are decked with the flashiest Christmas decorations. Valletta is no exception. Thousands frequent the city’s main streets during this festive period, hoping to find the right gift for their loved ones. 

In addition to the hustle and bustle associated with Christmas shopping, there are tonnes of events happening all across the city and the islands. It’s easy to lose track of time during the festive season, so we’re making things easier by running down the top Christmas events happening in Malta this year.

The Little Mermaid – A Panto Under The Sea

Something fishy is going on at The Manoel Theatre this December. FM Theatre returns with a unique spin on the classic tale of The Little Mermaid. Ariel, King Triton, Dame and Ursoola Minnofs will all feature as main characters, driving this magical tale forward. Disclaimer: you’re in for a good laugh!

The Nutcracker

This live screening straight from the Royal Opera House in London is a Christmas treat for all the family! Tchaikovsky’s much-loved composition is the perfect backdrop for Clara and her Nutcracker doll’s wonderful adventures.

Follow Clara’s journey to the Land of Sweets – a venture that’s vividly brought to life by Peter Wright’s excellent production of this ballet. Don’t miss out on witnessing this fine classic!

Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem

Date: 13/12/2019 – 05/01/2019 

Venue and Location: Ta’ Passi, Ghajnsielem (Gozo)

Malta’s very own nativity village is returning for its tenth year. The temporary hamlet is set up next to the quaint Gozitan village of Ghajnsielem. It’s constructed on 20,000 square metres of fields and involves around 150 actors and hundreds of volunteers who spend months prepping for this unique event.

Experience life in Judea of 2000 years ago and visit the villagers, shepherds and a good number of farm animals, not to mention the actual nativity scene featuring the Holy Family.

Natalis Notabilis

Date: 11/12/2019 – 15/01/2019 

Venue and Location: Sqaq Fra Diegu, Rabat

This event is an example of authentic Maltese Christmas celebrations. This Christmas village will include several food stalls and artisan products as well as a varied entertainment programme featuring drama productions, choirs and outdoor performances. Visit the charming town of Rabat between the 11th and the 15th of December, and explore what its Christmas village has to offer!

Valletta Waterfront Christmas Wonderland

Date: 30/11/2019 – 31/12/2019

Valletta Waterfront’s Christmas Wonderland is back for another year! This event features an exciting line-up of indoor and outdoor activities, and it’s safe to say that this family-friendly wonderland has something for everyone.  A 35-foot Christmas tree has already been set up. Right next to it, one can find Santa’s House, his workshop and his Enchanted Snow Garden. There are also a good number of free activities planned, including performances by children’s choirs and marching bands, and a proper Christmas village, to name but a few. 

NYE at St George’s Square Valletta

Date: 31/12/2019 – 1/1/2020

Location: St George’s Square, Valletta

Valletta will be ushering in the New Year with large-scale celebrations taking place at St George’s Square. The main show starts at 8 pm, and various top entertainers are set to perform, including Kevin Borg, Glen Vella, Clint Bajada and Pierre Cordina, to name but a few. Furthermore, a 3D Architectural Mapping projection will light up the façade of the Grandmaster’s Palace, and a children’s area will be set up in De la Valette Square. End the decade with your friends and family at this free event in the heart of Malta’s capital!

NYE’s at Valletta Waterfront

Valletta Waterfront will also be organising a memorable event to give a stylish-send off to the noughties. The New Year festivities will include a series of live-bands and DJs and a celebratory fireworks show as soon as the clock strikes midnight.
