2020’s Blue Flag Beaches in Malta

The Blue Flag Certificate is a prestigious certification issued by the International Blue Flag Jury of the Foundation for Environmental Education International (FEE). It is awarded to beaches, marinas and boating tourism operators that satisfy a strict list of environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility standards that must be maintained throughout the year. This year (2020), this prestigious award has been given to 11 beaches in Malta, including three Gozitan beaches. 

List of Blue Flag Beaches

The Blue Flag-compliant beaches in Malta and Gozo are Buġibba Perched Beach, Fond Għadir (Sliema), Golden Sands Beach, Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, Mellieħa Beach, Qawra Point Beach, St George’s Bay (St Julian’s) and Westin Dragonara Beach Club St Julian’s (managed by Westin Dragonara Resort) in Malta; and Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay, Marsalforn Bay and Ramla Bay in Gozo.

In regards to COVID-19, Malta has recently launched the ‘Safe and Sunny‘ campaign, which lays out a couple of guidelines that ensure every traveller’s safety this summer. 

The Top Recommended Blue Flag Beaches To Visit

Ghadira Bay, Mellieha

This sandy beach, also known as Mellieha Bay, is situated on the outskirts of Mellieha, Malta’s northern-most village. The bay is approximately 800m long, and its gentle slopes lead to deeper water, making Ghadira Bay a family and water-sports friendly beach. 

Riviera Martinique (Ghajn Tuffieha)

This stunning beach is a secluded paradise that’s nestled between two other beaches –

Gnejna Bay and Golden Bay. The unspoilt natural surroundings of hills covered with acacia, samphire and tamarisk trees, as well as the amenities nearby, make it easy to understand why it’s one of the top spots for locals and adventurous travellers alike. 

Ramla Bay (Gozo)

Famous for its golden-red sands and jaw-dropping backdrop, Ramla Bay is easily one of the top beaches in Gozo. Located on the northern side of the island of Calypso and a forty-minute walk from the village of Xagħra, this arresting sandy beach boasts one of the most incredible vistas in the Mediterranean. 

Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay (Gozo)

The crystal-clear, azure waters make Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay a popular spot, highly favoured by the locals. This bay has the best of both worlds since it is classified as both a sandy and pebbly beach. The small caves make it a popular diving and snorkelling spot.
