What to do in Valletta on Sunday?
- May 15, 2021
...la dolce vita
Valletta on a Sunday is the perfect example of the so-called la dolce vita. The everyday hustle and bustle slows down and is replaced by a throng of window shoppers traipsing down Valletta’s Republic Street or grabbing a coffee and croissant at one of the city’s quaint cafes. While most tourist traps are closed on a Sunday, there’s still plenty to do and plenty to see. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started.
The Grandmaster’s Palace
The Grandmaster’s Palace, also known as The Palace, is a majestic architectural masterpiece that dates back to the Knights of St John era. It’s one of the few sightseeing spots that are open on Sundays. Step into The Palace, and get lost in opulent staterooms that are a testament to Malta’s colonial past.
Upper Barrakka & Lower Barrakka Gardens
Treat yourself to some gelato and a spot of people watching at the Upper Barrakka or Lower Barrakka Gardens. These two public gardens are largely known for their panoramic views of Valletta’s Grand Harbour and serve as excellent hangout spaces for locals and visitors alike. If you’re a history enthusiast, drop by the Upper Barrakka at noon to witness a re-enactment of the saluting battery.
Valletta Waterfront
The Valletta Waterfront is known for its vibrantly coloured doors, exquisite eateries, stunning promenade and impressive views. It’s the perfect location for a drink or two on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Walk Around Valletta
If you’re the type of person that simply hates planning, you’re in luck. Valletta is a bonafide, open-air museum. Its splendid architectural wonders extend beyond museums, churches and theatres to private abodes, as Valletta’s beautiful houses and apartments typically feature traditional accents such as the Maltese gallarija (closed, wooden balcony and habbata (door knockers).
Go to the Cinema!
Valletta’s three main cinemas – Spazju Kreattiv, Embassy Cinemas and The Cinema Bar – offer something for everyone. Arthouse aficionados simply love Spazju Kreattiv and The Cinema Bar, while Embassy Cinemas is your go-to multiplex when it comes to the latest Hollywood flicks. And best of all – they’re all open on Sunday.
