5 Natural Arches in Malta

Malta’s picturesque landscape includes tonnes of hidden gems, including several natural arches or windows. While the collapsed Azure Window in Dwejra, Gozo, was one of the most popular tourist attractions of the islands, there are several other natural arches you can visit while in Malta. 

Marsaskala’s Window

The stunning coastline of Marsaskala could surprise those who are not familiar with the area. The seaside town also has a natural arch, which, while definitely smaller than the famous Azure Window, is still stunning to look at. Marsaskala’s Window is located right next to St Thomas Bay and just a stone’s throw from the WW2 Pillbox. St Thomas Bay is a popular swimming and nightlife location. Swimming there and grabbing a cocktail from Zion Reggae Bar is always a good idea!

Wied Il-Mielah, Gozo

Wied il-Mielah in Gozo is just a few kilometres from Dwejra. It is not as easily accessible as the Azure Window used to be, but it is definitely worth the drive or trek. It can be reached via a long stairway with a handrail. Afterwards, you can continue your trek along the coast to Wied il-Ghasri or further up to Xwejni. 

Ghar Hanex Window, Qrendi, Malta

The Ghar Hanex Window natural arch is a miniature Azure Window close to the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples areas. Unfortunately, the cave that connects the natural arch to land has collapsed. Therefore, you can no longer reach the arch by coast, so a boat ride is highly recommended if you want to take a look at this natural arch. 

Marks and Dukes Window, Mellieha, Malta

The Marks and Dukes Window is a beautiful hidden gem in Malta’s northernmost town. The best way to reach this natural arch is to drive to the end of the road of L-Ahrax – one of Mellieha’s neighbourhoods – park in front of the Chapel of Immaculate Conception and walk through a path alongside the cliffs to the natural arch. In addition to this stunning little gem, the drive to L-Ahrax is very picturesque. 

Saint Mary’s Battery, Comino

The Saint Mary’s Battery, built by the Order of Saint John, is one of the must-see attractions of Comino. However, in addition to this historical piece of architecture, there is also a natural arch just below the battery. It is best reached by boat – but stopping right next to it and swimming in Comino’s crystal clear waters is definitely a highlight!
